Walk into a Montessori classroom and the wooden materials may be the first feature you see. They are orderly, precise, and visually distinctive. But wood alone does not make an environment Montessori. AMI is explicit that anyone can buy or make the materials; what matters is the wider system in which the child, prepared adult, material, and prepared environment work together.

Before independent work, the Montessori guide may offer a presentation: a slow, exact demonstration, step by step, with minimal words. The cylinder block is kept straight and stable, aligned neatly with the table or mat. The adult sits beside the child so both share the same orientation to the material. The presentation shows only what is necessary for active engagement.

After the presentation, the adult observes rather than continuously directing. The child handles the cylinders, compares dimensions, tests possibilities, and works at an individual pace. The adult remains attentive and intervenes with restraint and purpose - for example, by planning a later re-presentation if observation shows that support is needed.

Many Montessori materials include a control of error. In the cylinder block, placing a cylinder in the wrong socket can leave another cylinder unable to fit. The mismatch is visible and mechanical. The child can notice it, compare the remaining pieces, and adjust independently. Error becomes information rather than a moment of adult judgement.

When purposeful work matches a child's interest and readiness, the child may choose to repeat it. Repetition is not forced. It gives the child opportunities to refine movement, discrimination, order, and attention. AMI describes the uninterrupted work cycle as a protected period in which meaningful choice and self-paced activity can foster deep concentration.

Completing the activity includes restoring the cylinders, carrying the block carefully, and returning it to its exact place on the shelf. This is not simply tidying. It preserves order, makes the material ready for another child, and connects individual independence with responsibility to the community.

Parents can look beyond attractive materials and observe what the child is actually enabled to do. Educators can reflect on the quality of presentation, observation, and restraint. School leaders can examine whether trained adults, authentic materials, an accessible environment, and protected work time operate as one coherent system.

A child notices leaves falling from a tree and asks, “Why do leaves fall?”

The question could be answered in a sentence and forgotten. It could also open a connected learning journey. What happens next depends on the relationship between philosophy, curriculum, and pedagogy.

These terms are often reduced to a simple memory aid: philosophy is the “why”, curriculum is the “what”, and pedagogy is the “how”. That shorthand is useful, but the ideas are richer. Their alignment can be seen in what children actually experience.

Educational philosophy concerns our beliefs about children, learning, knowledge, the purpose of education, and the roles of adults, families, and community.

In the leaf example, the key question is: How do we see the child? If we see young children as passive recipients or too young for complex ideas, the adult is likely to provide the answer. If we see them as curious, capable meaning-makers, the teacher listens, values the question, and creates an opportunity to investigate it through concrete, developmentally appropriate experiences.

Philosophy does not remain in a mission statement. It shapes everyday decisions.

NAEYC defines curriculum as the plans for learning experiences through which children acquire knowledge, skills, abilities, and understanding. Strong curriculum goals are meaningful, culturally and linguistically responsive, and developmentally and educationally significant.

The child’s question is not the curriculum by itself. It provides a meaningful context. The curriculum intentionally connects that question with valued learning goals and progression.

Through a leaf investigation, children may learn to observe closely; compare colours, shapes, and textures; classify using different attributes; develop descriptive vocabulary; recognise patterns of change; represent observations through drawings or charts; communicate findings; and deepen awareness of the natural world.

Curriculum therefore gives the learning journey direction, connection, and continuity. It prevents the experience from becoming a collection of attractive but disconnected activities.

Pedagogy is how educators enact the curriculum through relationships, interactions, questions, explanations, modelling, scaffolding, materials, environments, routines, documentation, feedback, and assessment for learning.

In the leaf investigation, the educator might invite children to collect and compare leaves, introduce precise vocabulary when useful, help them create categories, ask them to explain their reasoning, and offer different ways to represent what they notice. Children might revisit the same tree over several weeks, use their observations to discuss seasonal change, create a visual explanation, and share their findings with families or another group.

Research can inform these decisions, but it rarely supplies one universal method. Effective pedagogy combines evidence with knowledge of the children, the intended learning, culture, context, and ongoing observation.

Two schools may use the same curriculum and create very different experiences. In one classroom, children may copy a labelled leaf from the board. In another, they may observe, compare, question, classify, represent, explain, and revise ideas.

The difference is not the curriculum name. It is the alignment between beliefs, planned learning, and pedagogy.

Parents can look beyond labels and observe how children participate. Educators can connect learning goals with real experiences and reflect on the effect of their choices. School owners and leaders can ask whether staffing, schedules, environments, professional learning, and monitoring enable the stated philosophy and curriculum to be lived.

Montessori places strong emphasis on independence, concentration, purposeful activity, and a carefully prepared environment. Children choose from appropriate work, receive precise presentations, repeat activities, and use materials intended to support progressive understanding. The adult observes, presents, protects concentration, and intervenes thoughtfully rather than directing every step.

A high-quality Montessori environment is therefore not defined by wooden objects or neutral colours. Its quality becomes visible in the relationship between child, adult, material, and environment - including whether the child can act independently and, where appropriate, notice and correct errors without constant adult judgement.

The Reggio Emilia Approach begins with an image of children as capable, rights-bearing participants in learning. Children develop ideas through relationships and through the “hundred languages” - many forms of expression and meaning-making, including talk, drawing, movement, construction, dramatic play, clay, and music.

Educators listen, document, interpret, and prepare possibilities for deeper investigation. Documentation is not simply a display of finished work. It helps children and adults revisit questions, theories, and changes in thinking. A Reggio-inspired setting should therefore show children co-constructing ideas, using multiple forms of representation, and participating in sustained inquiry - not simply completing open-ended activities.

Waldorf early-childhood education places particular value on rhythm, story, imaginative play, movement, nature, artistic experience, imitation, and purposeful practical work. These experiences arise from a holistic view of development rather than from the belief that young children should not learn.

A Waldorf setting may look less formally academic than a conventional classroom, but learning is embedded in shared stories, songs, movement, seasonal rhythms, practical activity, and community life. Parents should still ask how the school introduces literacy and mathematics, observes progress, and responds to individual needs.

A philosophy matters, but a label does not guarantee quality. Two schools using the same name may provide very different daily experiences because implementation depends on educator preparation, relationships, leadership, routines, materials, assessment, and partnership with families.

So instead of asking only, “Which curriculum is the best?”, ask:

During a preschool visit, observe what children actually do, how educators speak with them, how choices and boundaries are handled, how play and intentional teaching are balanced, and how language, literacy, mathematics, movement, creativity, relationships, and individual needs are supported.

A curriculum label can begin the conversation. It should not make the decision for you.
